CSC-Certified Container Platforms for Industrial Robots

Standardized 20- and 40-foot container dimensions provide the basis for transportable robotic systems. BEC Robotics develops CSC-certified container platforms that can be transported worldwide using existing container logistics infrastructure and deployed at different locations. Integrated linear axes allow robots to travel along the platform, significantly extending their working range and enabling the processing of larger workpieces. The advantage becomes particularly clear with large or difficult-to-transport components: Instead of bringing the workpiece to the machine, the robotic system can be deployed directly at the worksite. The platforms can also serve as permanently installed manufacturing stations.

University of Stuttgart Reference Project: Large Industrial Robots on Linear Axes

For the University of Stuttgart's IntCDC Cluster of Excellence, BEC Robotics developed and built four mobile container platforms. BEC Robotics was responsible for designing the CSC-certified container platforms with integrated robot linear axes, integrating the KUKA industrial robots, including control systems, tool changers and grippers, as well as implementing the safety systems and commissioning the installations. With linear travel distances of up to 10.5 meters, the systems enable automated processing of large-scale components. The platforms are used at the Large-Scale Construction Robotics Laboratory (LCRL) to research automated manufacturing processes, including the fabrication of timber and fiber-composite components. Further details are available in the University of Stuttgart press release and the IntCDC project description.

Industrial Applications for Mobile Robotic Platforms

Container-based robotic systems can also be applied in industries beyond construction:

  • Steel fabrication and shipbuilding: Automated welding, grinding and machining of large structures

  • Wind energy: Machining and inspection of large rotor blade and turbine components

  • Industrial maintenance: Mobile machining and inspection systems for components that are difficult to transport

  • Special-purpose machinery: Container platforms as the foundation for customized manufacturing systems

  • Decentralized manufacturing: Transportable robotic systems for deployment across multiple production sites
